PREVENTION:

To Avoid CTS & RSI Problems When Working at a Computer or Typewriter:

  • Examine Your Work Habits: Watch arm, wrist, hand, and finger positions. Keep the forearm wrist and hand in a neutral (straight) position. Correcting poor work habits before carpal tunnel or repetitive strain injury symptoms manifest is very important!
  • Reduce Repetitive and Static Flexion: ( Typing, gripping tools, steering wheel, etc.)
  • Take Frequent "Micro-breaks" while performing rapid and repetitive or physically stressful tasks in order to reduce the onset of muscle imbalance, the main cause for the development of carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive strain injuries of the upper extremity.
  • Configure Your Workspace according to ergonomic guidelines. Adjust monitor height, keyboard position, and chair height to minimize stress on your musculoskeletal system.
  • Keep wrists in Neutral Position: Don't hold your wrists into hyperflexion or hyperextension while working.
  • Use office Equipment and Tools based on Ergonomic Design: It is important to utilize a good ergonomic chair, keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc . See Product Catalog.
  • Perform Stretching and Strengthening Exercises with FLEXTEND® or the FLEXTEND®-AC to prevent and eliminate existing muscle imbalances. Stretching and strengthening exercises improve blood circulation, provide oxygen to the tissues and lubricates the tendons, helping to prevent the onset of repetitive Strain injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Even if you monitor all of these things, you still need to maintain balance between all of the muscles in the body, especially the upper extremity.
